Sarah McLeod has been the front woman for the band The Superjesus, has had a number of side projects such as Screaming Bikini and has had a very successful solo career. Her new single Wild Hearts has just dropped along with new album ” Rocky’s Diner”. We caught up with Sarah to chat about music, her adorable dog Chachi and the tour.
Your new single ‘Wild Hearts’ just dropped. What was the inspiration for the song?
Its celebrating the beauty of normality and minimalism . Finding joy in what would seem to be the mundane. Everyone’s version of success is different, to me its about finding happiness within, once you achieve that nothing or no one can touch you. Anyone can do it, no matter what they appear to have or don’t have, its just a feeling, a very powerful feeling.
The story telling in your music quite often has themes of heartbreak and love. Is this what inspires you to write?
Not really, no. Im inspired by simplicity and people. Im inspired by feelings and emotions and how people react in certain situations. Im inspired by the human desire to connect and find your true self. And a good melody never goes astray
There is the concept that great art comes from great pain, do you agree with this?
I agree that great art comes from great sacrifice . It doesn’t necessarily have to be out of pain. You have to give a lot of your self to find the place where you can truly write with honesty and that takes great sacrifice and discipline.
Your dog Chachi tours with you and appears in the new video. Has she become some- what of a touring mascot?
Oh yeah, Chachi’s been touring with me for years when I was playing solo acoustic. Now that Im playing a full stand up rock show she still wanted to come. So I bought her some ‘Mutt Muffs’ so the music doesn’t hurt her little ears. She sits in on every rehearsal and comes to every gig, sometimes she’s allowed on stage, sometimes she just waits patiently in the band room. Sometimes i leave her in the band room and notice half way through the show that she’s snuck her way on to the stage. Usually its the crowd that notice this before me. Everyone loves Chachi and she gets off on the sound of the crowd. I even notice if I play something at home with an applause at the start, a live dvd or something, she will always get up and look around for the action. That dog is born for the stage 🙂
Has fame gotten to her now that she’s a bit of a star? Any diva backstage requests?
She did try and get on stage with Ritchie Sambora when I played a gig with him recently. I tried to explain to her that it wasn’t our show and she wasn’t allowed out there, but she kept trying. Ritchie found it amusing though…. as did the crowd!
You’ve been involved in a number of side projects over the years, any plans to bring Screaming Bikini back to the stage? Will Sammie Scream ever return?
ha ha ha ha…… NOPE. 🙂 But i will always have the T Shirt… in fact Im wearing it now!
What can fans expect from your solo show?
The solo show is actually a duo. Its myself and Mick Skelton on drums. Mick and I have been playing together on and off for 10 years. Its a loud stand up rock show whereby Im playing bass and guitar at the same time and mick is holding the groove. We both sing and between us we remarkably have managed to have all the parts covered. Its a fun show and totally rockin’. We do a re vamp of a selection of back catalogue releases and most of the new record.
You’ve appeared with Jeff Martin on stage a fair bit, any special guests at your show?
What does the future hold for Sarah Mcleod?
A hell of a lot of touring with this solo record, then my sights are back on The Superjesus for a bit. I also have a cool record coming out at some point that I made as a collaboration with Jeff Martin and Mick.
My main focus at the moment is this show we are currently touring, it just gets better with every gig, its exciting!
Catch Sarah’s shows when her National tour kicks off later this year.
