Brisbane’s well known for fostering supergroups and all-star lineups of the Queensland’s most beloved musos, but two emerging artists have taken the river city’s love-affair for collabs to a whole new genre-crossing level with SHVRDZ’ monstrous remix of The Dollar Bill Murrays’ breakthrough single “Medicine”.
Originally released in mid-2016, the fresh take on the hard-hittin’ rock track sees SHVRDZ (pronounced “shards”) interweave the irresistible grunge riffs and catchy chorus refrain with his signature thunderous beats, brooding synthesisers, and jagged glitchy drops.
SHVRDZ says he wanted to make sure the remix was both DJ friendly and would sit well in his live sets, as well as celebrate the songwriting of a Brisbane band that’s normally outside his genre.
“I loved the original so much, so I wanted to keep the ‘rock’ element alive as much as possible while keeping true to my own sound – the end result is something quite unique, I think!” says SHVRDZ.
The remix of “Medicine” adds yet another milestone to a productive year for The Dollar Bill Murrays. 2017 has seen the quartet release their acclaimed sophomore EP ‘Always On’, produce their debut music video, embark on their first interstate tour, sign with Brisbane boutique label Valley Heat Records, support several established acts including The Delta Riggs, and brew their own award-winning lager – Bill F. Murray Malt Liquor (the ‘f’ stands for f*cking) – with All Inn Brewing Co.
What’s more, there’s also whispers The Dollar Bill Murrays will drop a new single and tour dates by christmas – stay across the band’s social media for their latest cryptic hints and news.
Introduced to SHVRDZ by a mutual friend, the band say that they were stoked when the rising producer said he loved the riff and asked if he could remix “Medicine”.
“We love the direction he’s taken with the song and how he’s really made it his – there’s tonnes of energy, and those drops leave you wanting more. We can’t say we ever expected a trap remix of one of our songs, but we’re so glad it happened!” says the band.
Also enjoying a busy second half to 2017, SHVRDZ has been turning plenty of heads with his latest trap-infused single “One Life” – featuring divine Brisbane vocalist Aerborn. The moniker of Michael Holmes, SHVRDZ been crafting pounding beats and unruly soundscapes since he was 13-years-old after being inspired by Skrillex’s ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ EP.
In the past 18 months SHVRDZ has been truly prolific – releasing seven remixes, five singles, a collaborative EP with fellow Brisbane beatmaker Allistere, and in April 2017 his debut EP ‘Waiting’. His Soundcloud profile has already amassed well over 1 million streams, with his remix of Skrillex & Rick Ross’ “Purple Lamborghini” alone racking-up almost 900k plays.
