27 Listicle Series: Vexed

vexed

VEXED is one of Australia’s most powerful emerging emcees. Based in the tropical far north, his perspective is a unique addition to the country’s already highly diverse hip hop community — distilling a raw honesty that few dare to tap into. Pouring this realness into every track, VEXED has created something fittingly cyclonic on his latest EP

We got  the down low from Vexed on what advice he would give to up and coming MCs on the scene.

Top 5 tips for emerging MC’s with Vexed

  1. Don’t mix alcohol with business:
Too many times I wasted opportunities to network with industry professionals, at gigs etc.., because I took advantage of the free beer and ran-a-muck. It’s funny when you’re a kid, but as you get older you start to think back on those moments.

    2. Perfect Your Craft: Rapping is a lot more than just rhyming words. Learn how to construct your verse so that you can spit it in one take. Too many artists write dense verses that they struggle to perform. So, either practice until you can rap your verses effortlessly or cut back your syllables to allow room to breathe. Delivery is priority.

    3. Study the Production: I would encourage every aspiring MC to learn how to make a beat, or at least learn the production process, so that you understand what you’re paying for and remain creative-control in the mixing/mastering stages. Stop jacking beats and put in the work.

    4. Stay Creative: If you write at least 8 bars a day for 12 months, you’ll have stacks of material to work with. It doesn’t have to be the best thing you’ve ever wrote, just write it.

    5. Act Professionally: If you want to be treated like a professional you have to act like a professional. Go the extra mile, have fun and stay hopeful.
