Album Review: Lucy Wise ‘ Winter Sun’

lucy wise

A wonderful representation of healing, self discovery and the processes of becoming grounded and learning self worth. Melbourne based singer-song writer Lucy Wise presented the world with her third studio release “Winter Sun” on the 6th of April. The album presents the tellings of an incredibly well travelled singer-song writer, who connects emotionally and spiritually with people she’s met and places she’s visited and lived. It is no secret that Lucy is a gifted writer, but “Winter Sun” will have you experiencing a new sense of empathy and have you walking in her shoes from track one.

“Solid Ground” is a song about becoming grounded and finding your feet after a break up.It’s said to be an Appalachian Folk-inspired melody, delivering a warm folk-rock sound that displays immense character in its rhythmic and dynamic vocal nuances. The song is incredibly emotive and reveals that notion of familiarity in heartache and having to “walk to your own rhythm, to find your way to solid ground”, which beautifully represents the moment that you learn to love yourself. Her voice has a powerful and soulful tone, that continually allows and urges you to empathise with the lyrics/

Title track “Winter Sun” is a stripped back acoustic track with Lucy on the ukulele and vocals against gorgeous harmonies. The main focus of the song is on the vocals and lyrics, displaying the immense talent Lucy has vocally and within her storytelling. The sense of imagery in this song is extremely powerful, and it’s easy to imagine yourself catching that glimpse of Winter sun on a cool, cloudy day – a brief moment of comfort.

“Wild Roses” is a harmony drenched folk song filled with a sense of hope. The first line of the song, “To get to know you, I’ve got to know myself”, almost encapsulates the idea of the entire album, of the processes of self-actualisation. Her vocals are soulful and warming as she reminisces on travels and relationships she made there. Her wonderful lyrics, “you can sing out your heart no matter where you go”, is the realisation that even when you’re in an unfamiliar or familiar environment, you’re still you. The catchy and delightful melody, rhythm and chorus in this track will have you staring out the bus window, imagining you’re on an epic journey to anywhere.

The 11th track of the album, “Here for Now” is an emotion packed song about Lucy’s travels through the Peak District in the UK, where she spent some time dealing with her mental health. The slow paced acoustic guitar riff against Lucy’s vocals creates a great sense of nostalgia. She sings of her relationships she had and how they helped her through the taxing journey, mentally and physically, “and you helped me to look steady and not at the long way down”, and her consistent pursuit to be in the present moment, and avoid the creeping thoughts of wishing to be at the end of the journey.

Lucy Wise has delivered an incredibly powerful album, with strong emotions and symbolism in the company of a talented folk-rock band and instrumentalists. She delved into deeply personal battles and accomplishments, not only physically but mentally, and her soulful vocals allow us to be there with her, each step of the way. Make sure to catch the awesome Lucy Wise from May on her national tour around Australia.
